In the beginner sections, you were given a very good basic strategy for playing various hands before the flop. With this knowledge you are already in a position to beat the low limits. After you have played several thousand hands and become more experienced in playing after the flop, you will start to wonder whether you can expand and build upon this strategy. This is taken care of in this article. I’m proposing avoiding marginal situations and clever plays, and picking spots when your advantage is the greatest. Against a good player, or a table of good players, this will not work. They won’t let you draw to many of the hands this strategy revolves around, because they will sense you are passive and bully you. And when you do have a monster, they will simply walk away leaving you with a small pot. Wrap hands need not be as tightly bound as this holding, and a hand with a gap in it can also provide a draw to a straight that can be completed by any of 20 outs. Since bigger is better, the higher the starting cards, the more likely yours will be nut straight. So what’s the difference between this hand and one like A-K-Q-J, which is also a terrific holding? You can make more straights with the jack-high grouping because it can meld with cards above as well as below it in ranking. Although you won’t make as many straights with the ace-high grouping, all of the straights you manage to make will be the nut straight. Rest assured that there are plenty of people like myself (and many far better!!) waiting to relieve those people of their money. We won’t get them all. Some will get lucky. Some will learn very quickly. But generally they will leave with less than they came with, and in many cases they’ll leave with nothing. Some of them won’t even care because they want to gamble rather than play good poker which is fine. In fact that’s positively great.
