While it appears to be a fairly simple game, appearances can be deceiving. Texas Hold'em can
present some very complex situations, which is why inexperienced players often lose very quickly. It is a game that
one can quickly learn, but which takes a lot of time to truly master. In the following chapters, you will learn the
fundamental strategies

During pre-flop play, most of your opponents will already make some big mistakes, such as playing
too many weak starting hands. Because of this, it is important for you as a prospective poker player, to select
your starting hands carefully in order to play profitably. Throughout this strategy I refer to “small” and “medium”
and “large” bets. I deliberately don’t refer to a set amount of big blinds, because I think this is dependent on
the table. If the table is really loose, then a bet of 6 times the big blind is going to be small, but in a tighter
game this is going to be medium, and pre-flop it could even be big if it is unusual. What is important is how the
bet is viewed by the table generally. Obviously when you are calling with a draw then the bet size is linked to the
pot odds, but otherwise, try and fit in with the table. It is the reaction to the bet that is important, not the
actual size. In all cases, double suited hands are superior to those that are single suited, and single suited
hands are superior to those that are unsuited. All of these selections support the construction of big full houses,
big straights, and when suited or double suited, they also support building big flushes too — the kinds of hands
that usually win pots in Omaha games. This type of tourney generally allows 3 re-buys and one add-on at the end of
the first hour. I would employ the strategy of playing the first hand for the big blind and folding so I could
add-on right away and be the big stack at my table right away. I would then play my normal strategy with the
following modifications. An example of how the sandbagging rule works follows: A team has a current score of
228, and bids 5. Through the course of the hand they end up taking 8 tricks. They would score 53 (bid of 5 x 10 pts
plus three bags), but would have 100 subtracted for an updated score of 181. As you can see, it pays to not sandbag
